I have seen your pictures speak volumes…now I see your words draw pictures just as well!

As someone who used to swim across Chinna Creek (EEEK!!!) every day in the early 1960s, and wander amongst the mangroves, I have a personal attachment and concern about their plight.

I do hope the documentary gets wide viewing in Pakistan – or better, that you win some international film award…that is the only way anyone in Pakistan seems to get to know about the good things that Pakistanis are doing…and of course the bad things that they are struggling against.

ps: is there an NGO that distributes DVDs to schools…? Maybe we should get someone to do an add-on “Extra Feature” to the “pirated versions” of commercial and hindi films?

I am both suprised, perhaps naively, and in awe of Karachi’s coastal beauty. One can only hope that the work of Mahera and others will serve to raise awareness of the threats to the local environment and to change policy and opinion. I live on the Chespeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S., which is an endangered site. More than 30 years of study and billions of dollars spent in reclamation have done little more than maintain the unfortunate status quo. The sad lesson is that destroying an environment is easy; fixing an environment is quite another matter.

Great interview.. it completes the experience of seeing the documentary. Just the other day someone was commenting about your film and how moving it was mostly because you just presented the facts in all their complexity and let them speak for themselves without imposing a viewpoint.

The city govt. of Karachi is a tragedy. As is the provincial and national ones as well… hopefully someone somewhere in the long chain of govt. command watches “City by the Sea” and gets a wakeup call..
